EdPublica AI Policy
EdPublica AI Policy: Ethical, Transparent & Human-Led
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the media landscape — but at EdPublica, we believe that journalism must remain human at its core. AI can support our mission, but it must never compromise editorial integrity, scientific accuracy, or public trust.
Our approach is guided by a simple philosophy:
The issue is not whether we use AI; the issue is whether we use it ethically.
AI Supports Journalism — It Does Not Replace It
All reporting, analysis, editorial decisions, and scientific interpretation are carried out by human journalists, editors, and subject-matter experts.
AI may assist — but it never independently generates final stories, news judgments, or editorial positions.
Transparency in AI-Assisted Workflows
Whenever AI tools meaningfully contribute to a story — such as:
- data modelling
- transcript generation
- translation (with human intervention)
- summarisation
- visualisation
- pattern detection
- image creation (non-news imagery only)
— we disclose AI involvement when relevant and appropriate.
We do not use AI to generate quotes, fabricate context, or produce deceptive reconstructions.
AI for Data Journalism & Verification
AI helps us strengthen our data-driven journalism by assisting with:
- analysing large datasets
- detecting trends or anomalies
- cross-checking public data
- verifying images or documents
- enhancing scientific understanding
All findings are manually verified by journalists and experts before publication.
No AI Use in Sensitive Content Generation
We do not use AI to:
- create news photographs
- fabricate scientific imagery
- simulate expert opinions
- alter quotes
- generate content about real individuals
- produce misinformation or synthetic news artefacts
AI-created images are used only for illustration, never to depict real events.
Human Oversight & Accountability
Every AI-assisted output is reviewed by an editor.
The responsibility for accuracy, fairness, balance, and ethics lies with the editorial team — not the algorithm.
Privacy, Security & Data Protection
We do not input sensitive, private, or unpublished information into AI tools that store or reuse data.
We comply fully with:
- global data protection principles
- scientific confidentiality
- source protection standards
- minors’ privacy guidelines
Commitment to Ethical Innovation
EdPublica is an organisation rooted in science, evidence, and integrity.
We use AI to:
- enhance clarity
- increase accessibility
- improve research depth
- empower data storytelling
—not to cut corners or dilute journalistic standards.
Why Ethical AI Matters to EdPublica
As a publication deeply committed to science, education, climate, and data literacy, we recognise:
- the rising danger of AI-generated misinformation
- the growth of synthetic pseudo-science content
- the threat of deepfakes and manipulated media
- the importance of restoring trust in journalism
Our AI policy ensures that technology becomes a force for truth, not distortion.
AI is a tool — but ethics, accuracy, and human editorial judgment define our journalism.
At EdPublica, responsible AI use is not optional; it is part of our promise to readers.
