Donkey skin trade banned by African Union in historic decision
The decision has been hailed by animal welfare groups, who say the ban can positively impact both the indigenous African biodiversity, as well as economic livelihood of those who’re dependent on donkeys
In what animal welfare groups hail is a ‘historic moment’, the African Union has now approved a ban against the donkey skin trade.
On 17th and 18th February, the African Union (AU) head of states met at Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia, and ratified the proposal to ban the donkey skin trade. The mass slaughter of donkeys had provided for companies in China, a source of gelatin which could be extracted for use in a traditional, but unsubstantiated medicine, called ejiao.
However, this trade left the largely rural population affected and reliant on donkeys for their day-to-day work in a dire state.
“This is a terrific moment for communities in Africa who have benefited from donkeys since time immemorial,” said Dr Raphael Kinoti, regional director of the animal rights group, Brooke, in East Africa. He described the positive impacts the decision can have for efforts at preserving indigenous African biodiversity.
Africa is home to some 33 million donkeys, with about 5.9 million slaughtered per year, leaving the domesticated equine endangered. According to a BBC report, Kenya’s population of donkeys had reduced by 50% between 2016 and 2019.
“The slaughter of six million donkeys every year is an animal welfare disaster,” said Marianne Steele, CEO of The Donkey Sanctuary, an animal welfare group. “Donkeys are a lifeline to people living in some of the most challenging environments on earth where the loss of a donkey can be the difference between modest survival and destitution.”
Dr Kinoti praised the African Union for taking ‘bold and drastic measures’. He also said, “We urge all AU members to uphold the decision for the good of all.”

The Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) has recently announced the winners of the Infosys Prize 2024, recognizing groundbreaking research across six categories: Economics, Engineering and Computer Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. The awards, each comprising a gold medal, citation, and a prize purse of $100,000, were presented at ISF’s office in Bengaluru, India.
For the first time in its history, the Infosys Prize has focused on recognizing exceptional researchers under the age of 40, highlighting the importance of early career achievements in shaping future innovations. The awards were selected by international panel of jurors and were announced by ISF trustees, including Kris Gopalakrishnan, Narayana Murthy, and Mohandas Pai.
The Infosys Prize 2024 Winners:
- Economics: Arun Chandrasekhar (Stanford University) for his pioneering work on social and economic networks in development economics.
- Engineering and Computer Science: Shyam Gollakota (University of Washington) for his innovations in smartphone-based healthcare tools and battery-free computing.
- Humanities and Social Sciences: Mahmood Kooria (University of Edinburgh) for his contributions to the study of maritime Islam and Islamic law in shaping the Indian Ocean world.
- Life Sciences: Siddhesh Kamat (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune) for his research on bioactive lipids and their role in cellular functions and diseases.
- Mathematical Sciences: Neena Gupta (Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata) for solving the Zariski Cancellation Problem in algebraic geometry.
- Physical Sciences: Vedika Khemani (Stanford University) for her pathbreaking work on time-crystals and non-equilibrium quantum matter.
The Infosys Prize remains India’s most prestigious award for scientific excellence, with past laureates going on to receive global honours, including the Nobel Prize and the Fields Medal.
